Asphalt Driveway Calculator — Tonnage, Base and Cost

Sized for residential work. Pick a standard driveway preset or enter your own dimensions, add a turning circle or apron as a second area, and get the asphalt tonnage, the aggregate base tonnage underneath it, and an installed cost.

Preset for residential work: it starts in imperial units at 3 inches, and the shape presets cover the common driveway layouts. Add a second area for a turning circle or a parking apron and it accumulates.

Planning guidance: allow 9–10 ft of depth per parked vehicle, 12 ft minimum width for a single lane, 20 ft for two vehicles abreast, and a 25 ft turning radius at any curve a car has to negotiate at walking pace.

How thick, and how many lifts

UseCompacted asphaltLiftsBase
Cars only, mild climate2–2.5"14–6"
Cars only, freeze-thaw climate3"16–8"
Occasional light truck3"1 or 28"
RV, boat trailer, work truck3–4"28–10"
Steep grade (over 10%)3"28"
Soft clay subgrade3"1 or 210–12" + geotextile

Two lifts are better than one at the same total depth. A 3 inch pavement placed as 2 + 1.5 inches (loose) compacts far more uniformly than a single 3.5 inch loose pass, because roller energy does not reach the bottom of a thick mat. See the thickness guide for the aggregate-size rule behind this.

The base under the driveway

The stone base is where a driveway succeeds or fails, and it is usually a bigger tonnage than the asphalt.

SubgradeBase depthBase tonnage per 1,000 sq ftNotes
Well-drained sand or gravel4"17.5 tCompact in one lift
Mixed loam6"26.3 tCompact in two lifts
Silty clay8–10"35–44 tAdd separation geotextile
Heavy clay, poor drainage10–12"44–53 tGeotextile essential; consider stabilisation
Organic soilexcavate and replaceNo structure works over peat

Compacted crushed stone runs about 105 lb/ft³, so a 6 inch base under a 600 sq ft driveway is roughly 16 tons of stone against 12 tons of asphalt. Budget for both.

An irregular driveway split into two rectangles and a half-circle. Calculate each piece, then add the tonnages.

Most real driveways are not one rectangle. Add an area per element:

The road entrance flare is frequently forgotten and frequently the heaviest-loaded part of the whole driveway, because every delivery vehicle turns across it. Many municipalities have their own apron specification — check before you pour the base.

Caring for a new driveway

Frequently asked questions

How much asphalt do I need for a driveway?

A standard two-car driveway of 600 sq ft at 3 inches needs about 12 tons including a 10% buffer. A single-car drive of 300 sq ft at the same depth needs about 6 tons.

What is a standard driveway size?

Single car: 10–12 ft wide. Two cars side by side: 20–24 ft. Length varies, but 9–10 ft of parking depth per vehicle plus turning space is the usual planning figure. A 20 × 30 ft rectangle is the most common two-car layout.

How thick should a driveway be?

2–3 inches of compacted asphalt for cars over 4–8 inches of crushed stone. 3–4 inches in two lifts if you park an RV, boat or work truck.

How much does an asphalt driveway cost?

$3–$7 per square foot installed in 2026, so $1,800–$4,200 for a 600 sq ft two-car driveway. See the driveway cost guide.

How long before I can drive on a new asphalt driveway?

24 to 48 hours for cars. Wait 3–5 days before parking heavy vehicles, and avoid turning the steering wheel while stationary for the first few weeks — that is what causes the scuff marks people complain about.

When should I seal a new driveway?

6 to 12 months after installation, not sooner. New asphalt needs time for the lighter fractions of the binder to cure off. Sealing too early traps them and softens the surface. After the first seal, every 3–5 years is typical.

Can I pave over an existing driveway?

Yes, if the existing surface is structurally sound — no alligator cracking, no settlement, adequate drainage. A 1.5–2 inch overlay costs roughly half of a full reconstruction. If the base has failed, the overlay will reflect the cracking within two years.

What slope does a driveway need?

A minimum of 1% fall away from the house, 2% preferred. Never pitch water toward a foundation or a garage door. On steep sites, a level landing at the garage of at least 10 ft is worth designing in.
