Asphalt Parking Lot Calculator — Two-Lift Commercial Design
Specialised calculator for commercial parking lots. Two-lift design: binder course (asphalt base) + surface course (wearing layer), consistent with AASHTO and most state DOT guidelines.
Typical Parking Lot Designs
- Light duty (cars): 2 in binder + 1.5 in surface = 3.5 in total.
- Medium duty (commercial): 3 in binder + 1.5 in surface = 4.5 in.
- Heavy duty (trucks/bus): 4 in binder + 2 in surface = 6 in.
Example: 10,000 sq ft Medium-Duty Lot
- Binder 3 in: 10,000 × (3/12) × 145 ÷ 2,000 ≈ 181 tons
- Surface 1.5 in: 10,000 × (1.5/12) × 145 ÷ 2,000 ≈ 91 tons
- Total 272 tons + 10% buffer ≈ 299 tons
- At $130/ton ≈ $38,900 material only
Parking Lot Considerations
- 1.5–2% slope required for drainage.
- Heavier sections at entrances and dumpster pads.
- Polymer-modified binder in hot climates.
- Striping and signage are additional line items.
