Asphalt Millings Calculator
Estimate how many tons of asphalt millings (reclaimed asphalt pavement, or RAP) you need for a driveway, parking area, or temporary surface. Millings are denser than gravel but less dense than virgin hot mix.
Density of Asphalt Millings
Compacted millings typically range from 120–130 lbs/ft³ (1,920–2,080 kg/m³) — lower than virgin HMA (145 lbs/ft³ / 2,322.7 kg/m³). For accurate estimates, reduce the calculator result by roughly 15%, or recalculate at 125 lbs/ft³.
Coverage Reference (Millings at 125 lbs/ft³)
| Thickness | Coverage per Ton |
|---|---|
| 2 inches (5 cm) | ~96 sq ft / 8.9 m² |
| 3 inches (7.5 cm) | ~64 sq ft / 5.9 m² |
| 4 inches (10 cm) | ~48 sq ft / 4.5 m² |
| 6 inches (15 cm) | ~32 sq ft / 3.0 m² |
Where Millings Make Sense
- Rural driveways and farm roads.
- Temporary access roads and laydown yards.
- Low-cost parking surfaces.
- Sub-base under planned future paving.
Millings are not a long-term substitute for finished HMA on high-traffic surfaces.
