Asphalt Driveway Calculator
Estimate exactly how much hot mix asphalt your driveway needs. Pre-tuned for residential driveways — typically 2 to 3 inches thick over a compacted aggregate base.
How to Use the Driveway Calculator
Measure the length and width of your driveway. Recommended thicknesses:
- 2 inches — standard residential, light vehicles.
- 2.5–3 inches — heavier vehicles or freeze-thaw climate.
- 4 inches — long, sloped or shared driveways.
If your driveway is L-shaped or curved, divide it into rectangles, calculate each separately, and add the tonnages.
Driveway Tonnage — Quick Reference
| Driveway Size | 2" Thick | 3" Thick | 4" Thick |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 sq ft | ~6.3 tons | ~9.4 tons | ~12.5 tons |
| 800 sq ft | ~10.0 tons | ~15.1 tons | ~20.0 tons |
| 1,000 sq ft | ~12.5 tons | ~18.8 tons | ~25.0 tons |
| 1,500 sq ft | ~18.8 tons | ~28.2 tons | ~37.5 tons |
| 2,000 sq ft | ~25.0 tons | ~37.5 tons | ~50.0 tons |
Always add 10% for waste and compaction.
Choosing the Right Thickness
Driveway thickness is a balance between cost and durability. Cutting corners on the base course is a more common failure mode than insufficient asphalt thickness.
