How Asphalt Tonnage Is Calculated
- Volume = Length × Width × Thickness
- Weight = Volume × density (145 lbs/ft³ or 2,322.7 kg/m³)
- Tons = Weight ÷ ton conversion (2,000 lbs or 1,000 kg)
The 10% buffer accounts for compaction and waste loss.

Ordering Tips for Contractors
- Truck capacity is typically 20–25 tons. Plan deliveries to keep the paver fed.
- Mix temperature drops fast — schedule trucks tightly, especially in cold weather.
- Always confirm the supplier's specific mix density. If it differs from 145 lbs/ft³, recalculate.
